Jordan Retires!
January 13th, 1999. I wake up for my 8 am class, and after class, I rush home
like no one, for one reason. To see the press conference of the greatest
basketball player announcing his retirement. Yes, Michael Jordan has played
his last game as a NBA professional, and he goes out on top, hitting the game
winning shot in the 1998 NBA Finals, with 6 NBA Championships, and considered
by everyone to be the greatest basketball player ever to live.
As I watched the press conference, I was trying to assess what had just happened,
and I realize how much this impacted me as a fan. As a huge Laker fan, I have
always rooted against anyone who played against the Lakers, even Michael Jordan.
But soon I realized that is it darn near impossible to dislike Michael Jordan,
even if he is playing on the other team.
This announcement is severely damaging to the NBA, especially when fans are
still angry about the NBA lockout. Losing your best and most popular isn't
going to help at all. David Stern must be kicking himself right now, because
this, as
David Aldrigde of ESPN.com says, is an end of an era
in this league. The dynamic trio, Bird, Magic, and Jordan, are forever gone
from the game, and these three is the reason why the NBA has become this
popular in these past two decades.
But what Jordan was different from Bird and Magic is his marketability. From his
Nike's to his Gatorade, Jordan not only bring excitement to the court, but also
economic prosperity in endorsement. Ask Phil Knight of Nike. But it is his game
that captured our hearts as basketball fans. His gracefulness, fluidity out on the
court makes the game feel like music. His presence out on the court gives everyone
hopes of seeing something spectacular. Mark my words, there will never be another
Michael Jordan, no one will even come close.
